pro7 logoProSieben is a German Free-to-Air Television Network owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media. It was launched in January 1989. It is Germany's second-largest privately-owned television company. ProSieben not only produces some of its own programmings but also imports many American programs. ProSieben Fun, a pay-TV channel was launched by the network on 3 May 2012. On September 3, 2013, a third channel, ProSieben Maxx, began broadcasting.

There are three feeds to the channel: ProSieben Austria (for Austria), ProSieben Schweiz, and ProSieben Germany (for Germany). They have different news and advertisements for each country. This is the main difference. The English slogan of the channel is "We love you to entertain." ProSieben broadcasts via the Astra 1L, 3A satellites. It is also uplinked by MX1 now part of SES Video.

Thomas Kirch transferred his shares in KirchMedia to his father at the end of 1999. This company then comprised the majority of Sat.1's and ProSieben-Gruppe's shares. Urs Rohner, a Swiss business lawyer, was elected CEO of ProSieben on February 1, 2000. Georg Kofler, who had been the CEO of ProSieben from its inception, resigned. Urs Rohner was not an expert in the television industry. Leo Kirch asked him to be appointed in order to legalize the fusion of Sat.1 and ProSieben.

ProSieben's subsidiary SevenSenses was founded in March 2000. In June 2004, it merged with SZM Studios to form the ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion GmbH. Twelve years after ProSieben's founding, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange traded the first shares of ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG on 13 October 2000. The merger of the marketing businesses Media Group Munich (ProSieben), and MEDIA 1 created SevenOne Media. The merger resulted in the creation of ProSieben Television GmbH which manages the ProSieben television station.

Nicolas Paalzow was ProSieben's managing director in 2000. In May 2004, he was succeeded by Dejan Jocic. He was then replaced by Andreas Bartl, who was the former CEO of Kabel eins. Thilo Proff was appointed chief of the station in May 2008. Jurgen Horner became the station's chief in April 2011. Wolfgang Link has been ProSieben's managing director since August 2012. ProSiebenSat.1 Media was purchased by a group of investors around Haim Saban in 2003.

Axel Springer SE attempted to buy ProSieben in 2005 for around EUR2.2 billion. This would have made ProSieben the third-largest European media group. The Federal Cartel Office and the Commission on Concentration in the Media did not authorize this purchase at the end of 2005/beginning of 2006. Springer announced that the takeover was canceled on 31 January 2006. Saban remained firm in his intention to sell the channel. Permira and KKR, investment companies, took control of a majority (50.5%) stock capital of ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG on 14 December 2006. They became the new majority shareholder. ProSieben purchased the SBS Broadcasting Group for EUR3.3 billion in 2007, at the initiative of KKR, Permira, and a large part through loans.
