fox 11 logoKTTV or Channel 11 News live is the West Coast flagship station for Fox Television Network, licensed to Los Angeles (California), USA. It is owned by Fox Television Stations, a subsidiary of Fox Corporation. It is part of a duopoly that includes MyNetworkTV West Coast flagship KCOP (channel 13). Both stations share studios at Fox Television Center West Los Angeles. KTTV's transmitter can be found atop Mount Wilson.

Early years (1947-1954)

KTTV's roots can be traced back to 1947 when the Times Mirror Company, the publisher of The Los Angeles Times, granted the station its license and construction permit. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), granted it one of five simultaneous licenses to interested parties in the launch of commercial television stations in Los Angeles. CBS, the owner of KNX radio, bought a 49% stake in the station in 1948 and helped to complete its construction. In exchange, channel 11 was made the Los Angeles television outlet. KTTV, Incorporated, a Times/CBS-owned holding, began operations on January 1, 1949. From 1995 to 1995, the station's first telecast featured the Tournament of Roses Parade. Channel 11 would broadcast it every New Year's Day.

Times-Mirror bought the Nassour Studios in May 1950. This was a large motion-picture facility located on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. KTTV's operations were centralized there. CBS was not part of Times-Mirror's purchase. At the time, its West Coast production facilities were located at Columbia Square. CBS Television City was still in its planning stages. FOX 11 Los Angeles Live transformed Nassour Studios into a major television production house, producing programming locally as well as for the emerging syndication market. Before the move, KTTV had operated from several facilities, including the former Capitol Records headquarters (which later became KHJ radio's longtime home and KCAL-TV), on Melrose Avenue.

In 1950, CBS purchased its station in Los Angeles - the pioneer station KTSL (channel 2 renamed KNXT and now KCBS TV) - which was being spun off by the Don Lee Broadcasting System due to its sale to General Tire and Rubber. CBS had to sell its interest in KTTV because of FCC rules that prohibited two stations from being owned in the same market. The Los Angeles Times would regain complete ownership of channel 11, when the sale was finalized on January 1, 1951. After two years, KTTV's relationship to CBS was over. The network then moved its programming to KTSL. A few months later channel 11 was accepted to be the Los Angeles branch of DuMont Television Network. It had previously been affiliated with KTSL (channel 5) and KTLA (5).

Independence (1954-1986)

DuMont moved its programming from channel 9 to KHJ-TV in 1954. KTTV was then an independent station. The station was briefly affiliated with NTA Film Network in the late 1950s. Channel 11 gained an advantage over its competitors in 1958 when it became the television station for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball club, which had moved from Brooklyn, New York, that year. KTTV's Dodger telecasts, for the first 11 years, were restricted to games against archrival San Francisco Giants. Eventually, there were more Dodger games on the station and the blackout for home games was lifted. The relationship between KTTV & the Dodgers would continue until 1992.

Confidential File, a KTTV show that covered the 1962 Convention of the Daughters of Bilitis, aired shortly after Confidential File was syndicated nationally. This was the first American national broadcast to specifically cover lesbianism.

In 1963, the Times-Mirror Company purchased the station from Metromedia. Metromedia later purchased KLAC (570AM) and KLAC-FM (102.7FM), giving them channel 11 on the radio dial. Metromedia would later arrange a trade-in FM frequencies. KLAC-FM moved to 94.7 FM in 1965 (later to be KMET, now KTWV).

KTTV's 1970s entertainment program included children's programming, off-network reruns, and old movies. It also featured a 10:00 p.m. newscast. In the 1970s, John Jones was the Sales Manager, George Putnam, the news anchorman, Hal Fishman, the co-anchor, and Ken Jones, the first black TV newsman in L.A. Tom Kelly, TV sports reporter, Terry Mayo, noontime, and Rona Barrett taped their syndicated gossip report, which was written by Barbara Sternig. KTTV was a regional power station with the advent of cable television. KTTV's Dodgers broadcasts and 24-hour programming made it a regional superstation.
